Tips for baby proofing your home

As a new mother you would do anything to protect your baby who is still not able to crawl, from dangers around your home. But what about when your baby begins to crawl! Would you be able to keep up to his pace of curiosity? No, and moreover now nothing that once looked perfect seems safe for baby anymore. Considering the risk and that baby relies on you for his safely, now it is time to baby proof your home to avoid baby head bumps, injuries from objects lying around and other target injures. Of course, you will need to invest in a little time and you can accomplish the task at the cost of nothing.
The first step would be to ask someone to crawl around your house and watch for any dangers from a baby eye-view. Remember your baby and his curiosity would be growing, so look out for the objects and areas that could cause him harm. Here is a few steps to follow:
1.Baby's nursery
Babies should always be put to sleep on their backs. Avoid keeping soft blankets, toys or any other objects in his crib as these pose a suffocation hazard and other injuries to babies. Check that the crib railings are 2-3/8 inches apart so baby's head wont trap in between. The mattress should be securely fitted in the crib and the railing should be high enough so baby wont crawl out. Position the crib away from windows to avoid strangulation from curtains. Keep all other baby essentials away from reach.
4.Stairs
Lead your child up the stairs and always keep it clutter free. Use Gates on top of stairs to avoid baby's from falling off. Install secure latches on the gates. and ensure the slats are not too wide as baby can trap himself. Avoid placing flower pots on the stairs which can topple over.
3.Living Room
Always keep the floors slippery free or install a carpet for better safety measures. Move book shelves into the storeroom or anchor them to the wall. Check for tiny objects on the floor which baby can get hold of and pop into her mouth. Plug up or tape all electrical sockets in all rooms. Check for broken window panes. Secure all electrical gadgets so that it doesn't topple over baby. Install bumper cushions to the edge of sharp furniture to prevent baby from injuries.
2.Kitchen
Put cleaners high up away in cabinets or use childproof locks on the lower cabinets doors. Use door stops on drawers and store sharp knives/glassware and other kitchen utensils away in the higher drawers. Keep handles of pots and pans with food cooking facing the back of the stove, for babies attempting to stand, will try to reach out and pull them. Never prepare baby food with hot boiling water or pass it over a baby. Check your child's high chair is well equipped with restrained straps. Make sure the child is strapped on his waist and between his legs securely. Keep baking soda and a fire extinguisher in case of fire.
5.Bathroom
Medicines, cosmetics and other essentials should be stored away in cabinets out of baby's reach. Don't set the heater for more than 120 degrees F, and check the temp before pouring on baby's body during his bath. Utilize a no-slip or rubber mat for baby in the tub and never leave him unattended. Install lids on toilets seats and when not in use, keep it closed

Babies base will help you be a better parent
Being an internet addict i am always on the look out for new articles and sites for information to satisfy my curiosity on how things work, but most important, i search for information that would be useful for me and my kids. How to raise them the best i can, etc..
All other parents should take a look at babiesbase which is a baby site and provides plenty of information on topics like pregnancy, and elder kids as well. I think i should also register on the site so that as a member i can discuss my parenting problems and lend my advice to other mothers on the forums itself.
I know of many curious first time moms who don't know what and how to do a certain something for their babies. They try searching the internet for help. There are some dads too, who are left alone in the house to care for their kids while their wives are away at work. These parents would be pleased to gather so much information from one site alone.

Can i add salt to my baby's food?

Can i add salt to my baby's food, if not, when can i begin and what quantity?
You mustn't add salt to your baby's food throughout her first year, but babies normally need an intake of less than 1.g of salt during her first six months, which will be met by breast or formula milk. While babies more than 6 months to 12 months need just about 1.g per day, toddlers till three years old kids need about 2.g per day.
Excess consumption of salt could result in baby's damaged kidneys. Also, lead to high blood pressure in the later stages of life, specially in those families with hypertension history.
Follow these recommendations and tips, and all will be fine:
Limit the intake of salty foods in your baby's diet, or avoid adding salt at all to foods while cooking.
As babies are sensitive to taste so endure your baby has 'salt free' foods which don't necessary have to be 'flavor free'. Some steps to make babies enjoy enriching and flavored foods(salt free)
1. Herbs, aromatic spices or garlic- adds flavor and have their own benefits!
2. A little black pepper- good for indigestion
Babies foods like cereals and jar foods already come with low salt content from during the processing itself and should not be confused with foods aimed for older children. In other words, feed foods labeled as appropriate to babies and kids of their own age group.
Read food labels in order to understand how much salt content is present in foods meant for babies and feed them only those that contain salts no more than 0.1g of sodium per 100g. Remember: 1g of sodium is equivalent to 2.55g of salt.
Fruits, vegetables, salads, plain meat, poultry and fish, eggs, pulses and milk are some foods which contain low salt naturally. Don't add salt to rice and pastas while cooking!

My deep concern for my baby's illness this month

I've just returned to blogging and writing days after Alisha, my little Almost 3 years old was down with fever, cough and other ailments like vomiting, diarrhea at different times during the month of August. Being a mother it was my responsibility to care for the little one as my first priority even though i know my passion for blogging is beyond realms. I haven't even updated my other main personal blog much the whole of last month but it can understood that i was a more concerned mom of a little sick girl as the monsoons caused us additional worries. Alisha, was too weak by a diarrhea and dehydration which started off as a fever and cold. We had to check her up twice by the doc because while she recovered after the first visit, days later, she took ill again and this time for worse.. In a few articles from now, i'd like to post on my experiences and some advice and information on a toddlers illness especially vomiting and diarrhea because i know how panicky a parent would get if she/she saw her child in a helpless state, and not only would the parent be panicking, the child would panic too.. :-)

Clothing and activity advice for parents of toddlers and babies
Mommy's of the today's world, don't we know how much fun it is to be a part of the Babies and toddlers daily life as they go on to entertain us, and not to forget keeping us on our toes all day caring for them.
How do you feel when you watch your toddlers play in their imaginary world? doesn't it make us want to give them the best of all the toys in the shopping mall so that it helps to enhance in their motor and other development skills, or don't you want to see your toddlers get settled into a room filled with lovely comfortable Nursery furniture so that they are able to utilize their own space independently which will help them to nurture themselves into independent adults.
I strongly recommend you get your child engaged into activity centers which can provide a much needed breather for new parents as entertaining a new baby can be exhausting. These centers are designed to confine an infant to a designated space and allow them to explore and play in a safe environment.
New parents, remember your babies and toddlers are growing as quickly as you couldn't ever imagine with each passing month so it's advisable to select Toddler clothing which are a little large in size, go for button less clothes to snap of and on and which don't need ironing in a hurry.
Babies are naturally curious. Little hands and feet quickly find places they were not meant to explore. Babyproofing and home safety your home is essential to keeping your child safe and ensuring that you as new parents are able to maintain your sanity. It's important to evaluate your home for potential hazards before your child is crawling and walking. Many items can be safely moved out of a child's reach. Other items, like electric cords, stairs and kitchen appliances will need to be properly outfitted with safety mechanisms to protect inquisitive tots from injuring themselves.
Safety stair gates are very important if you have a crawling toddler because chances are there that the toddler can fall, so its safe this way to install gates at the top and bottom of the stairs.

How to clean babys gums and teeth

It is important to clean baby's gum's or teeth from its early baby days because like kids and adults, teeth plays a huge and important role in a baby's life too, as it helps the baby chew its food and form words while speaking. Its also effects the baby's jaws in growth. Healthy teeth= a happy healthy baby :-)
You can start cleaning its teeth few days post the birth. Take a soft wet cloth, wrap it around your finger and wipe your baby's gum's after meals and feeds. This helps to remove any plague left over from eating. Make this a routine which will help the baby get accustomed to the cleaning and will help in the brushing of their teeth later on. Also help in the dental visits.
Once the baby is 1 year old, you can start using a brush with soft bristles and a toothpaste which doesn't contain fluoride. This type of toothpaste is safe even if the baby does swallow some of it.

Tips to stop a baby from crying
You've tried everything possible, rocking, cuddling, singing, walking but nothing seems to interest your baby. Now what? you are already so tired and frustrated, you could yell your lungs out! But hey wait.. Babies tend to get moody and bored just like adults! They need that constant attention/checking or something to divert their minds..
Always keep in mind these tips below
Isn't it normal for babies to cry?
Of course it is normal. They also need to say something, don't they? Its their way of communication, they need you to understand them but sometimes parents don't understand their babies needs, and things get worse.
He may need you to check his basic needs
He maybe hungry so try giving him a feed. That dint work then he could of messed his diapers, check that out from time to time as babies hate being soiled and wet. He could have been overfed, burp him. Put him on your lap or shoulder and slightly rub his tender back. There could be the possibility of illness.. call your doctor for advice.
Try something different to divert baby's mind
Go out in your garden and point out to the birds, trees and anything that attracts his attention. Imitate the sounds of the birds and other animals for him, while making faces. Put on your TV(any kids channel), some amusing music, you hairdryer or the vacuum would work the best. Let him hear the noises and he'll start to wonder what on earth is that?
Leave him alone for a while once you checked on all his basic needs
Sometimes babies need times for themselves, they need to discover their own world. Leave baby cushioned alone in a safe place and attend to the chores near him. Maybe he'll cry for a while and stop but don't forget to keep checking him every five minutes.
Baby should be amused by now.. you've done everything possible to quieten him and you deserve his laughs. Why not play peekaboo with him?? My baby loves this game:)
